Optic neuritis is the cutest , the sweetest , the fantastic of the answers I have ever read so far ! ( not the condition though)
It usually appears as long answer question , I so wish to have read this earlier with so much interest !
It hits your imagination in the most filmy way!
After a marathon of exclamations let me tell you what it is.
It's nothing but a demylination & inflammatory disorder of optic nerve. Done?
Cause?
Most of the causes are termed as 1.idiopathic (in most of the diseases in the text book , easiest to write down) next is the second most common answer 2.heriditary , as I told you Its a demylination disorder lets name a disorder umm... 3. Multiple sclerosis! Next? Yes , some 4. Inflammatory conditions please , (fatal ones ) AIDS , syphilis , cat fever then? -Itis... got a clue? No? Any 5.infection you consider will cause inflammation . Name some. Chicken pox , whooping cough , glandular fever, measles and mummmps!
Tadaa
Now the classification which I know you'll grasp at once from the picture below :
Symptoms :
It has the most fascinating symptoms which I am eager to share .
It's more like a movie scene.
₹---Your tube light is blinking (progressive) for a while then...Powercut ( sudden progressive and profound visual loss )
₹--- there is such a bright light in the dark room that you can't bear ( Visual obscuration in bright light )
₹--- soon after that everything gets to normal except for some dull eye ache
₹--- next day you go out for a walk , you realise that you have lost your color vision. Suddenly , there is hindrance to your sight quiet a couple of times ( uhthoff sign , transient obscuration of vision) , which resides when you go into shade.
₹--- you fall into a pit on your way home (loss of depth perception ). (Pulfrich phenomena).
₹--- once home you have glowy sensation( phosphenes) when you hear loud sounds.
Signs:
When you goto the doctor he says that your color vision, visual acuity , contrast sensitivity is severely impaired .
He observes that your central field of vision is lost (Centrocaecal scotoma)
And?
On ophthalmoscope , he says he sees nothing ( retrobulbar neuritis)
You tell him that may be there is a fault in your stars (macular star formation) ( neuroretinjtis)
Suddenly your retinal veins become tortuous , haemorrhages , exudates become visible . ( papillitis)
Prognosis:
The doctor says you will take Atleast 2-5 weeks (1 month) to recover. 90% of people who came to him with such signs did!
Treatment
For safety , he asks you to go for a MRI to see if you have multiple sclerosis.
He says giving keeping you on steroids will only worsen your condition .( treat the underlying cause - infection , inflammation)
Kbye
So far so much
Excuse my punctuations
It's a spontaneous post!
