Hello Girlies!
These are the typical bad days filled with self-doubt and moods and the impossible desire for twenty-five hour-days.The angst leading up to those exams.
Recognise that the exams we are about to enter will comprise probably one of the hardest weeks of our lives so far. Recognise that you are more than prepared.
+The fear of final year drains people more than the syllabus actually. The constant pressure to pass out is never ending , the determination to remember everything and that you have learnt nothing is huge.
++With so much stress already , you have family expectations to live up to . Many of us , being the eldest or the youngest of the siblings have to be part essential decision making in family politics. Well , some might be well versed with it while some are left in dilemma.
+++ This point would not have been there if this was a decade earlier . But the constant pressure to look good , feel good , impress people is always there . Youngsters these days are more conscious about their physiques , various dietary regimens than they were a decade ago.
Hence , I conclude final year to be the toughest phase of your life . Therefore HELL YEAR .
Here is what we need to know:
1. Everything you need to pass these exams is already inside the cranium.
2.You may feel as though you only started studying this year, or three weeks ago, or yesterday, but you have been studying for this since the day you started medical school.
3.Alhamdulillah, almighty has blessed us with an incredible brain that can soak up and store memories and retrieve them years later, and now is the time to trust the complex organ.
4.Now is the time to remember to breathe. It is the time to spend extra money on healthy meals and to eat as many study snacks as we need.
5. Now is the time to nap when we can, because know that at night when it is time to sleep our brain will probably be too anxious to sleep.
6. Now is the time to take care of yourself, and ensure that you spend at least half an hour a day (yes, even on exam days) on relaxation.
7.Run, or do yoga, or watch youtube videos. I don’t really care, we should do something to get through this week - normal , coherant and ALIVE!
8.Recognise that these exams are 50% knowledge and 50% mind games.
9.The game is to convince not only our examiners, but our ownself, that we are a safe doctor.
10.You need to walk into that exam venue with the authority of an intern. An intern that knows that they do not know everything, but that they are competent to recognise and treat, and save lives, and to call for help when they are out of their depth.
11. If it is an emergency, you start with ABCs. If it is not, you have a formula: history, observation, palpation, auscultation. When your nerves scream too loudly for your brain to think, it is these formulae that will ground you.
12.Your examiners want to know that if you end up being THEIR intern next year, they will have a good team on their hands. Show them that they WANT you on their team.
13.Do not break yourself down and for god’s sake do not freak out. Now is not the time for if only’s. Now is the time for accepting that you have done what you could do and to trust your brain, your abilities, and whatever else it is that inspires and carries you.
Medical students represent an extremely limited selection of people your age and they will tend to be both very capable and hard working. This can sometimes result in you feeling rather demoralised when comparing yourself to other medics, especially as you will tend to notice the ones working harder than you more than the rest. Remember, the people you are comparing yourself to represent the very top fraction of students in the country and as such you should not be disheartened if some of them are better than you. In fact there will be plenty of other medical students at the same level as you who are making the most out of university to develop themselves as a person, not just as a students.
I took excerpts from other blogs as well to make it a whole to do manual! I hope it helps .
So far so much .
And those who already passed out . Feel free to add your input. 😀
