Hello people
A self proclaimed EM fanatic , today is my Emergency Medicine Day. The 27th of May. What would a 3 year old Emergency Medicine Resident have done on Emergency Medicine Day ? Cut a cake ?Clap hands for the awesome spirit I have had , munch the cake and walk away.
As I grow another year older , surviving a pandemic... I have concerns. On this Emergency Medicine Day , I intend to not just cut a cake but also a piece of mind to think about growing my speciality apart boasting it.
The Frontline
EM is the gatekeeper and security net of the hospital which is already under a lot of pressure.Even in the middle of the night, even during the Holidays, even when they lack proper protections or when they are understaffed With COVID the EDs were more stressed and stretched. I sit down to think and work over services that could possibly minimise the physical and mental burnout.
How discussion helps ?
Encourage citizens to talk about it
As an undergraduate , I knew nothing about emergency medicine. Surgery was always my number one . Why? Because nobody spoke to me about it. Neither the media , nor my professors ... Nobody. My curiosity landed me in EM. If a civilian is aware about the existence and functionality of a department, he would then think of enrolling his/her kid into it. Be it a nurse / doctor/ paramedic. There are more than visible people to help.
Awareness among patients
The culture that customer is the king is overrated. In corporate setup , the patient becomes the king.
Awareness that the king is considerate and wise about the surroundings. Awareness about alarming symptoms and reaching to hospital at the right time. When the condition is not life threatening wait for their turn.
Empathy amongst healthcare personnel
Empathy towards one another. Listening to one another. Understanding that there is space for everyone on the table. We are limited resource . Competition stunts our growth while compassion speeds it.
Involve Technology
Involve Technology to make things faster for us for faster patient disposition.
Awareness amongst Institutions
Emergency room is face of the hospital. Adequate staffing and resources boosts the hospital.
How do we do it?
By initiating a dialogue. A dialogue to make the minds ticking. It took about a decade for people to talk about mental health.
The pandemic has given us a platform to talk about us. Rather than the difficulties we face , we can pitch in ideas and encourage involvement.
So far so much
Happy Emergency Medicine Day
