Hello
Welcome back to my boot camp transformation series, where I'm sharing my journey of unlearning and relearning in a candid, humorous, and fun way. Let me take you through an eye-opening experience I had at a Quality Improvement (QI) conference, where mental health was a major topic of discussion. Trust me, this one's a rollercoaster!
Mental Health Matters
I found myself at a QI conference, and let's just say it was a mental health extravaganza. Mental health was the star of the show, and I was about to get an education that I never expected. The highlight of the conference? A lived-in experience practitioner for mental health patients. This person was like a real-life superhero, helping not only those struggling with mental health but also their families understand why they behaved the way they did. It was a revelation, to say the least.
Unconscious Bias and the Elephant in the Room
One of the most fascinating takeaways from the conference was the discussion on unconscious bias. It is brave to talk about it. As it turns out, when it comes to mental health, unconscious bias based on ethnicity can prevail. It's like the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about. But guess what? They did. Very well,
Different Strokes for Different Folks
One of the most mind-boggling revelations was the idea that the way people express their mental health struggles can be vastly different depending on their race or ethnicity. It's like a multilingual symphony of emotions, and understanding this diversity is crucial in providing effective support.
Diverse Tables and the "What Ifs" and "Why Nots"
As I sat at tables filled with people from all walks of life, it got me thinking about the "what ifs" and "why nots." What if we approached mental health with a more open and inclusive mindset? Why not acknowledge that there's so much we don't know and be willing to learn from each other's experiences?
Attending the QI conference was a transformative experience in my journey of unlearning and relearning. It opened my eyes to the complexities of mental health, the power of lived-in experience practitioners, and the importance of addressing unconscious bias. It also made me ponder the significance of diversity in our approach to mental health.
So, as I continue to explore this uncharted territory, I invite you to join me on this wild ride of discovery. Stay tuned for more stories, insights, and maybe a few laughs as I navigate the twists and turns of my boot camp transformation series. In the end, it's all about growing, evolving, and becoming a better version of ourselves. Until next time!
Cheers!
So far so much
